Thank-you for volunteering to represent Greyhound Gap at public events. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our charity, and without your valuable support we could not continue to save the lives of so many hounds and find them perfect forever families.
We are lucky to have a dedicated group of volunteers who have now run events for us for many years. Below are a few 'good volunteering' guidelines that have been compiled with their help and which draw upon their experience of running enjoyable, effective and problem-free events. We hope the guide will help our newer volunteers to gain the confidence to run their own events for Gap in the future
The Guide to Good Greyhound Gapping: Street collections / Meet and Greets
Before your event:
• Organisers - Always ensure that you have to hand any relevant permits and permissions for inspection on the day (where necessary)
• Organisers - Please communicate to all participants the meeting point, start time and approximate end time of your event
• All participants - Please swap contact details with each other so that any unplanned changes, late arrivals or cancellations can be communicated efficiently to all concerned
During your event:
Please do:
• Always remember that as a fundraiser you are representing Greyhound Gap – stay professional, positive, polite and proactive
• Inform interested passers-by of the main aims of Greyhound Gap, why we need to fundraise, and how any money raised is used
• Issue leaflets or business cards to anyone interested. Avoid just handing them out, as they could be dropped as litter
• Inform passers-by of the website address / telephone numbers if they are interested in fostering / adopting a hound / offering to help Greyhound Gap in any way
• Use posters / displays if possible to promote awareness of sponsor dogs and dogs needing homes
• Inform passers-by how they can donate to Greyhound Gap - check this link for ways of paying:

• Safety first: Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert to potential hazards (e.g. tripping hazards, spilled liquids etc.). Minimize or eliminate risk wherever possible for yourself and members of the public
• Safety first: Only undertake lifting and handling tasks that are both safe and within your own physical limitations. Minimize or eliminate lifting and handling wherever possible.
• Safety first: Be aware of security at all times, and safeguard your own possessions and Gap's resources as well as you reasonably can
• Have fun!!!!!
Please don’t:
• Rattle your tins / buckets or ask for a donation
• Harass / call over the public
• Allow yourself to be drawn into negative or confrontational discussions
• Answer questions to which you do not know the answer. Refer the question on: Ask for help / advice from other volunteers in the first instance, and remember that no answer is preferable to a wrong answer. If you don't know the answer, it is better to say so
• Please do not take your dogs to an event if you think they will be stressed or unhappy
If you are taking your dogs:
• Make sure you take water, treats, bedding (as they WILL lie down most of the time!), muzzles if needed, and lovely fancy dress outfits on special occasions to embarrass them / entice the public over!
If you would like to arrange or volunteer at a Gap event and you have any questions at all, there is a wealth of friendly advice available on the forum: Please feel free to ask any questions at all, and we will advise and support you as fully as we possibly can.
THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING FOR GREYHOUND GAP!
