Billy is a black greyhound, approx 3 years old. Not ear marked. He is about 28" to the shoulder approx. He is in lovely condition with a couple of old scars on his body.
He came from a stray pound in July/August 2010. He was originally found in a field with his brother (who is still at the shelter and isn't doing too well )
Billy has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped by the lady that offered him a home and has had his KC vacc in October 2010. He eats James Welbeloved Turkey & Rice, dry, twice daily and sleeps in his owners bedroom, next to her bed on a quilt at night. (He has a fleece indoor coat for the night time if its cold).
When one of our volunteers went round to meet Billy he was a little timid at first and seems a little hand shy. He can also be a bit skittish with sudden movements with strangers but was not with Janet his owner. When the volunteers husband came in, he loved him straight away and got a bit giddy, but his owner said that at first, he was very timid around men.
The reason Billy needs to find a new home is his owner is 72 years of age and when Billy first landed he was very shut down and under weight. Now he is back up to health he is a little lead reactive and will bark and leap around when he see's other dogs and the lady does not feel strong enough to hold onto him and deal with this to rectify. Its very common behaviour for a greyhound and with firm consistant leave its and socialisation is easily rectified but it would be advisable to walk Billy on a lead and muzzled whilst continuing with his de sensitisation and socialisation. At other times he walks beautifully to heel and does not pull.
The lady who currently owns Billy has grandchildren aged 6 and 10. Billy is OK with them now but when he first arrived and the children visited, he would take himself off to another room. His owner agrees that he would be happiest in a home where there are no young children (and no young visitors).
Billy spends most of his time with his owner but she has trained him to be left alone at home for half an hour, then an hour and now two hours. She leaves him with a chewy stick and he's fine for this period of time.
Billy is now fully housetrained. He does need to go out to the toilet first thing in the morning as soon as his owner gets up and he whines to let her know that he needs to go out.
Billy currently lives in a bungalow so may need some help with learning stairs!
He has got a greyhound friend (male) who he is sometimes taken for on lead walks with and he has also spent some time with hiw owners daughters dog who is a male collie cross of medium size. The collie cross is old and doesn't play so Billy just followed him around the house.
Billy is NOT cat friendly and would be better being rehomed either as an only dog where he will only be left for short periods of time or with medium to larger breed dogs.
Billy being a typical greyhound sleeps a fair bit but as he is young, he does have some energy and likes to play with his soft toys in the house. He took treats off the visiting volunteer very gently and waved his paw at her for more attention.
From the volunteer who visited.....
In a nutshell then, Billy is a very lovely, handsome boy who ideally needs a home where he won't be left for too long and where he can be either a single pet or maybe with a medium or greyhound size dog as a companion. His owner has a little book where she has written up some notes for Billys new owner and I know she has included her contact detais and it would be nice if the new owner was prepared to be in touch with her.
Billys owner would like to find Billy a new home as soon as possible as she is starting to struggle with him but all the rescue centers who would be best placed to take him are full to the gills and struggling to get all the dogs in danger of euthanasia into their care. Although Billy is not a Greyhound Gap dog we will be willing to work to commit to any new family with help settling during the intial period and offer continued support if necessary as and when. We will also commit to carrying out the homevisit on behalf of Billys current owner and offering ourselves up as the middle man through the adoption as we would our own hounds.
For more information on Billy please call Lisa on 01782 544728 or Liz on 01473 623343.
Billy is currently in ROCHDALE LANCASHIRE but can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland subject to a succesful homevisit and the potential adopter being willing to visit Billy and his current owner
