Sadie is a very pretty 5 year old whippet/lurcher cross who is currently being fostered by me on behalf of Scruples Whippet Rescue in Glossop, NW Derbyshire.
She has been with us for nearly 3 weeks and in that short time has changed rapidly from being a very scared and nervous dog into a very affectionate and cuddly one who likes nothing better than to snuggle up close on the settee.
However, like a lot of rescues, she is not without problems. Whilst she is fine in the house, she is still very nervous of strangers, especially men, and will snap if approached unawares. She gets on OK with our two whippets although does pester them to play by standing, barking and play bowing and doesn't seem to know when to stop! She walks nicely on the lead but will bark at approaching dogs. She is not 100% house trained – she knows what to do when you tell her, but as yet hasn't actually asked to go out herself. Her recall also needs work. She does have mild separation anxiety but it usually fine left alone with our two. We're not yet sure whether she is cat friendly. At some point she has been taught to sit and will also then hand you her paw! Our vet thinks she is probably neutered but we are not 100% sure.
We feel that she needs an experienced owner to help her continue her growth in confidence and to carry on some basic training and socialization. A home where someone is around most of the day would suit her best. Because of her nervousness she is not suitable for a home where there are children under 12 and any over 12 should be dog savvy. And because of her fear of men we think she would be happiest in a home with a couple or a single woman. We think she would like the company of another, confident dog who can help her see that the world isn't such a bad place after all but would probably be OK as an only dog. We are initially looking for homes within 40/50 miles of Glossop as, because of Sadie's nervousness, we feel it would be better for her and her prospective owners if 2 or 3 meetings could be arranged before her final move.
She is a beautiful, affectionate little girl who will make a wonderful companion once she has overcome her difficulties. She has come so far in such a short time that I'm sure she will quickly flourish in the right environment.
