Had a phone call from Lisa could I go and get a 7yr old greyhound bitch out of her present home and would I be able to foster her?
It was a really beautiful summer’s evening when I arrived at the house and walked into a pitch black hall with no sign of a dog. Asked owner where she was and she said she’s behind you under the stairs, it was soooo dark I couldn’t actually see her so crouched down and called her name and this pair of beady eyes were staring back at me. She came tentatively out and there she was in all her glory, Star, a very pretty marmalade brindle greyhound with the most gorgeous brown eyes ;D
After a quick chat about how she didn’t like this and didn’t like that, lived in the house (?), only fed her once a day cos that’s all she needs and oh by the way she hates the car, out into the sunshine we went without a whimper. She jumped straight in the car and for the whole journey home stuck her head right out of the window grinning happily
She had lived with her owner for 5 years since coming out of training at the age of 2 but they said she kept giving their child “funny looks” and had to go She hadn’t been living in the house judging by the denseness of her coat, I could have knitted a jumper with the hair that came out of her by just massaging her. She wasn’t desperately skinny but was underweight, had horrendously long nails, her teeth hadn’t been looked after at all and she was just closed down
Met my 5 dogs without bothering at all and ate her supper in literally 3 mouthfuls, she was just so very hungry.
We did have an enquiry about her after a couple of weeks but it all fell through and the thought of her going anywhere else upset us both so much, we decided she couldn’t let leave us and when I asked Lisa if we could keep her she said “Oh go on then”!
It was so lovely over the following months to see her come out of herself and start living life to the full and most of all her eyes coming alive. She has good recall and loves absolutely nothing better than charging about off lead (no brakes at all tho’!) which always starts with her bee waggle dance and a huge grin when you first let her off
She demands love and attention by constantly pushing her nose under your arm and would stand and do that all day if you let her and yes will come in and pee on the rug if you don’t watch her last thing at night
Thank you Lisa for letting us keep her , she is my Grumpy Old Woman and I absolutely love, love, love her to bits ;D ;D ;D
When she first arrived
And now, in her favourite place
