As told by her new mum Amanda for the February Newletter on behalf of Gap
We had both wanted a dog for a long time but never felt the time was right. After moving to a new home, we felt ready, but as we both work full-time we wondered if it was the right environment for a dog. Wouldn't a dog get lonely and bored being alone all day? Don't dogs need a lot of training?
We thought long and hard about our situation, when somebody mentioned a retired Greyhound to us. We first thought they were joking, don't they need a lot of exercise? After finding as much information as possible on Greyhounds, we quickly realised that a Greyhound would be perfect. Yes, they like to have a run but they don't need a lot of exercise (20 minute walks twice a day is sufficient) and most importantly they are a really lazy dog and are happy to laze around all day. Another plus is that they don't shed fur as they are short haired. Great, even better. Still only have to hoover once a month!
During our search for Greyhound information, we came across a couple of dog rescue internet sites. Under the dogs needing home section, we found "Fallon Fantastic Greyhound Girl! ". We read the description of her and thought how perfect she sounded. Two minutes later we had messaged the lady to see if we could adopt her. The lady turned out to be Lisa who is the founder of Greyhound Gap. After speaking to Lisa about our situation, she agreed that we could adopt Fallon. I had already been homechecked by one of Greyhound Gaps volunteers because we had approached another organsiation with view to adopting.
Four weeks later, we collected Fallon and introduced her to new home. So far, she has been a little star and has quickly become part of our lives. The main training we have had to do with Fallon is to reassure her that when we leave we do come back. She's not doing too bad and is quickly learning the routine. We were amazed to secure a dog walker whilst we were working and that again was another of Greyhound Gaps volunteers Anna. We couldnt believe she was so close. Anna has also been a tower of support to Carl and I.
Friends and family who have visited think she is wonderful. They still can't get over the fact that she sleeps most of the time. You can watch her trying to keep her eyes open, sleep always wins!
The ad was right, Fallon is a fantastic Greyhound girl!
