Ever since we have had Georgie we have wanted a second dog. But we did have concerns. Georgie suffered from seperation anxiety and we were both worried that a second dog might learn from Georgie and we'd end up with two dogs with the same problem. We both worked full time and although my partner could take Georgie to work so she was never left alone, he couldn't take two dogs and I couldn't take a dog to work at all . Plus there were other logistical problems with having two dogs too.
So this went on for about 2 years: me seeing pictures of beautiful greyhounds and lurchers on Greyhound Gap and trying to persuade OH that we could have a second dog "look at this beauty!!", but to no avail. Much as he would love a second dog he was way to sensible! But then our circumstances changed and I started to work part-time, and somewhere where I could take a dog to work with me!
And then came Tyler, Louis' littermate. Having been returned to the breeder by the people who had bought him because he wee'd and crapped when left all day whilst they went to work, Lisa was quick to pull him out of the same situation that she had pulled Louis from and place him with foster mum, Pauline.
As soon as I saw the pictures of him that Lisa posted in the Homeless Hounds, I knew that he was destined to be with us. Maybe it was that he was the absolute spitting image of Georgie as a puppy but something clicked inside and I fell in love with that puppy the minute I set eyes on his picture.
I kept up the very subtle barrage on OH every time Lisa posted another picture of Tyler. Lisa and I had many, many conversations and knowing Tyler, she just knew that he would be the right dog for us. She had an answer for all our concerns - and we all know that Lisa wouldn't just say what we wanted to hear, that's not what she's about when it comes to homing dogs. The home must be right, not just a home for a homes' sake. But she knew Tyler and had got to know me through all our phone calls. it was also a really big help to be able to talk ro Pauline, who was fostering Tyler, to get more of an idea of his day to day behaviour as well.
I kept hoping that someone would snap Tyler up and put an end to my anguish but it wasn't to be. 10 days later and he is still looking for a home. At that point OH melted..."get on the phone to Lisa right now, Georgie wants a friend". And just like Lisa, I knew OH wasn't just saying the words I wanted to hear. He'd been thinking long and hard too and when he said "yes" I knew that this was also what he wanted.
Well!! I was on tenterhooks all night in case he changed his mind! But he didn't and a few days later I was on my way to Stoke with a friend to pick up Tyler! Georgie came too and when we walked into Lisa's sitting room, amidst all Lisa's dogs, Georgie and Tyler made a beeline for each other. I think something clicked there too!
OH's face when he first laid eyes on Tyler when I got home is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life....love at first sight!
Tyler has been with us for 2 months now and it feels like he has been with us forever. He and Georgie adore each other totally and our fears over the seperation anxiety have been unfounded. Tyler is such a laid back chap that Georgie has actually been influenced by him and her anxieties all seem to have disappeared! We love this boy so much and our family is now complete!
Georgie and Tyler just after Tyler came home
We waited a long time for Tyler to come along and the only advice I can give you if you see your dream dog here on Greyhound Gap is to take your time, think everything through and talk to Lisa, chat through everything with her and be sure that your match is as much made in heaven as ours is!
Angela, Gerry, Georgie & Tyler!
