Malcolm is a beautiful young saluki x boy who is currently in foster in the Lancashire area. Although Malcolm is in Gap's foster care he is also still in the charge of Greenfields Greyhound Rescue.
![[image] [image]](http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-sjc1/hs286.snc3/27940_427448520803_558100803_5886264_5760534_n.jpg)
Malcolm is a charming chap with a 1001 good qualities but is also quite a complex little dog so will need a very savy, dedicated home with people who are fair but also quite firm. If given an inch Malcolm will take the proverbial mile.
Malcolm is fabulous with other dogs and is living with cats, however, the cats he lives with do stand their ground and will not take any nonsence, timid cats or cats that run we feel would open up a whole new game for him.
Offlead Malcolm has wonderful recall, you can turn him on a sixpence 99 per cant of the time but he can get very intent on the chase so more work needs to be done here. Likewise when he is offlead if he does run over to other dogs his play mannerism is very much that of a bull in a china shop and he will often broad side them heavily which does not necessarily go down well with other dogs and their owners. If you can stop him before he gets to close one call is usually enough to break it and bring him back.
Malcolms other problem is being left. He was originally rehomed by Greenfield but came back for being vocal and destructive. Emma who has fostered him has done sterling work with this boy and he is now confident to be left for a couple of hours at a time but is crated and surrounded by other dogs and we feel Malcolm really does need to go into a *pack* as opposed to one of just a couple of dogs, he gains his confidence being left from numbers.
Malcolm has started to attend obidience and agility lessons and is a natural at both, he loves to please and we feel a home where someone did do something worky with their dogs instead of just run them physically would be best for Malcolm as he is a dog that needs a job.
I will ask Emma who is fostering him to add more details to this thread and fill in any blank spots I have missed.
Malcome is vaccinated, de flead, de wormed, microchipped and neutered.

Oh my - I luffs this lad I really do - when I saw him up on the homing page I had a bit of a lump in my throat eventhough I knew it was happening!
Lisa has summed Malc up really well - he is a cracking dog that wants to please all the time but he does worry if he thinks he is getting things wrong. When he first arrived I thought that he was a bit dim but he would just shut down when he wasn't sure of what you wanted him to do. Now he is settled in he works like a dream and picks things up very quickly.
Up until last week he rarely put a foot wrong when we were out and about - this week he has decided he is feeling confident in his home/surroundings and is pushing the boundaries a bit to see what will happen He failed to recall this morning because he thought he knew where a bunny had gone (although to be fair to him he didn't go more than 10 meters away from me despite really really wanting to) but being put back on his lead for 5 minutes was enough of a reminder for him to mind his manners for the rest of the walk!! Yesterday he went to Otley agility show and he was superbly behaved. He ignored all the other dogs on the exercise field (apart from the dogs I said he could play with) and stayed in a down wait while I had a long chat to a friend - there were a lot of dogs moving at speed very close to him so it was a real test of self control for Malc and he showed me just how well he has learned his lessons over the last few weeks.
We have been doing a lot of work with him on his self control to help with his dog manners and his behavior when he is left and it seems to be paying off. I can leave him for a couple of hours loose in the kitchen with the other dogs for company and he doesn't appear to move off his beanbag. It must be noted however that I only leave him for more than a few minutes if he has been out on a long run - his behavior is definitely linked to the amount of exercise he gets. At night he is normally left loose again in the kitchen with the other dogs for company and up until the last week or so he has been good as gold (after the first week of settling in). This last week he has decided he is going to pee on the floor. The last 2 nights he has been back in his crate while this habit is stopped, and both nights he has been clean and waited for me to get him up in the morning. I'm pretty sure that another couple of nights in the crate will be enough to sort this problem.
Exercise wise he needs lots and lots of free running and then a bit more! He needs to run with a buddy that is as fast as him and is able to give him the tellings off he needs to make him control his urge to bump and nip. He doesn't mean to hurt he is just extremely boisterous because he has never had the chance to learn what is expected of him. He is already massively improved with discipline coming from both my own dogs and me. He loves to play ball and will fetch for hours and hours which is how I've done a lot of his training as it seems to be less confrontational for him.
I feel like I've written quite a lot of negative aspects relating to Malc, but he really is a loving, eager to please, stunningly handsome young man. A lot of the issues that he has have been created one way or another for him, and not by him - he deserves the chance to relearn how life can be for him. He is quite immature in his outlook so as he gets a little bit older he will settle down quicker and quicker.

Awwwwwww, Malc!!!! I've met this lovely boy and I thought he was just great! When I met him he showed such good manners, and it was great to watch him coming to grips with agility Unfortunately I just would not be able to give gorgeous Malc the kind of home that he needs - plus my two hooligans would sharpishly show what they'd think of a new dog in the house: I'm not allowed to bring one in! But anyone who's got a few dogs at home already and who is thinking of adding to their pack should really consider Malc: great dog, wonderful personality and those eyes!!!!!

Malcolm is my bestest bestest lurcher friend and I will be very very very sad to see him go to a new home I have my fingers crossed that nobody will see this post and he will have to stay with Aunty Emma
He has taught me lots of good things, how to run really fast, how to tease my older brother (shown me few good lurcher moves that I now practice at every opportunity) He is very friendly and plays nice with me even though I am only a puppy....
He shares his house at the moment with lots of other dogs but still likes to get lots of cuddles off the two legged ones. He has started to come to agility just like me - but he is a bit older and gets real poles.... he is so well behaved that my mum often threatens to swap me for him
I would miss him lots and lots and lots but I hope he can find himself a new family very soon as he is such a special boy.

Malcolm makes me smile ALOT!!
Malcy is a genuine boy who is eager to please. He has come on leaps and bounds since I first met him. He wants to get things right- he just needed someone to show him how.
He comes on walks with me and my pack of 3 dogs almost everyday and he shows off his ever improving manners and playfulness! And yes, I can confirm his recall is spot on! He loves his walks and wow (!) how stunning he is when he runs! Gorgeous boy! He gives great cuddles and I try and sneak them in whenever I can!
If you are looking for a dog and have the time, experience, fitness(!!), patience and understanding then this strikingly handsome boy is for you! He needs a second chance to prove how wonderful he is! Malcy has so much more to learn, do and see- maybe you could be the one to show him and take him on his journey? He has everything to offer the right person- he just hasn't found them yet.
I do hope that someone considers this special boy- he truly does deserve a very special forever home of his own!

Finally found you malc,
I first met you when you arrived at emma's and you were stunning then but now you are just ....delightful, seeing you run a few weeks after your arrival around the field at otley was a pleasure to watch. Your manners for a young dog are fantastic you didnt go to say hello to other dogs unless you were told you could, your down stay while i spoke to your mum was brill if you go to do agility then someone will have a fab wait on start line. you played with various lurchers, border collies and many other breeds in a large group of dogs and you just wanted to play (i know your mum says you can be rough but not this day manners were high on the list). Recall was suberb with lots of dogs flying here there and everywhere, im in no doubt the forever sofa you find will have a very special boy to fill it.
Amos and fred will always have a run with you young man and their manners arent as good as yours so please could you teach them some next time you met them.
looking forward to malclom cuddles next time i meet you gorgous boy.

Thanks to everyone for putting nice comments on about Malc - your cheques are in the post! Seriously all my fosters are loved and adored by my friends who get to spend a lot of time with them, but Malc seems to be a bit special - everyone is begging me to keep him because they all love him so much. This week his behaviour out on group walks has been PERFECT and he hasn't put a foot wrong. He is now focusing on his toy rather than coursing the other dogs and has been happy to play chasing games without the barging and bumping that he normally does. Yesterday we walked with a 5 month old border terrier pup and Malc was so gentle and well mannered around him. I think someone might have swopped him for another dog that looks like him!
Tony has started taking Malc out jogging with him and after the first day of complete bewilderment he seems to really enjoy it. He has also been the best behaved dog around the newly arrived ferrets (and that includes Flea who was brought up with them as a puppy). The only time he shows any interest in them is at feeding time when he is so very hopeful that some might be for him.

Right - who's swopped my norty Malc for goodboy Malc????? Over the last week he has really settled in to life with us, he's bright and alert without being over giddy, he enjoys running on his walks without feeling the need to barge and nip (much!) and his training is coming along nicely. Tony has been taking him to baby agility classes and he loves it - he tries so hard (you can practically hear the whirring of his brain) and totally ignores the other dogs when they are working which is another major step for him. On Saturday we went to a Working Trials have a go day with our agility club and although we didn't intend to work Malc (I wanted him to have a rest day) we did end up letting him have a quick bash at a few of the fun things. He loved the scale (but then he clears the fence around my caravan without touching it) and was pretty well behaved when we let all the dogs have a free for all at the end of the day. I suddenly realised this week that I have stopped worrying when I go out and leave him and at home you just don't know he's there. He gets himself on his bean bag and only moves for feeding and a few times in the evening he will bring himself into the living room for a cuddle, check if we will let him on the settee (we won't!) and off he pops back to his bed! I can't believe that this young man hasn't been snapped up as eventhough he has things he needs to work on he is just the most goodnatured, handsome, willing cuddlemonster ever and he never fails to make me laugh.

Last night Malcolm came to agility training with me - not to train as Tony is away racing his kart - but just for the night out. Fortunately for him one of the young girls had no dog to run because hers is recovering from surgery so she very kindly offered to run him. I wasn't sure what would happen, although I did expect him to run back to his Mummy but thought the experience would be good for both of them. I didn't know whether to be very proud or cry buckets as he went off with a 15 year old who he hadn't met properly up until then without a backward glance (just goes to show he will be anyones if they have sossige and his wubba!)
He worked brilliantly and young Jess handled him very well indeed and looked after him all night for me. He was much gentler with her than with us when he was playing tuggy and I have to give him massive credit for not taking the mickey when faced with an inexperienced and slightly nervous new handler.
Once home he crashed out on his bed pooped out with his efforts.
Thank you Jess for giving him such a great night, and well done Malc for a super effort for a new handler in what is still a fairly strange environment.
I might have a quick video of him training last night if anyone is interested in seeing it when I get chance to download it.
